Microwave foods have for a long time had a bad press , but we still continue to consume an enormous number of them and the trend continues to grow. So where did microwave meals begin and how have they progressed.
Microwave meals are the natural progression of the TV dinner, introduced in the United States in the 1950's and popularised in the 1960's by Jackie Kennedy.With the introduction of microwave safe trays in 1986 the first microwave meals were produced. They were often flavourless and came out of the microwave looking nothing like the meal on the package. Until recently the meals were preserved using large amounts of salt and hydrogenated fats, both of which have been proven to be extremely bad for your health. These products were used to prolong the life of frozen meals and as a flavoring, as the freezing process tends to take some of the flavor away from the food when it is reheated.
In the past few years as the western world has become more and more health conscious, and health experts have revealed the effects these products can have on the heart and general well being of people who consume too much of these products, the meal manufacturers have started to produce chilled meals and use healthier products, as preservatives, during the freezing process. These meals have become very popular among the more health conscious and are becoming marketed extensively online.

There are still many meals that do not adhere to using these healthier stabilisers, but with there being ever more single people of all ages and peoples lives becoming busier microwave meals are here to stay and the great thing is the healthier meals will be no longer part of a niche market.Over the next few years the healthy options will have the greater market share.
