My favorite kind of crafts are inexpensive, easy, quick and useful.
It really impresses me when a craft is versatile, too. This craft that I'm going to share with you has all of that and it's a way to recycle!
Tv Dinner Trays
If you look really hard at the photo, you'll notice it's really a meat tray. You know, the kind of Styrofoam trays that hold the meats in the grocery store. They come in lots of different sizes and you decorate them all the same way. Then, you can use them to hold all the little things that seem to accumulate in your pockets. And you could make a larger one for, say, Santa's cookies?
Actually, I make several to hold all the cookies and breads at Christmas dinner (I just omit the embellishments and the glitter).
What a nice way to hold a home baked bread or a few cookies for the neighbor!
We'll come back in the summer because this is something you can do year round with just a few alterations.
Anyway here are the instructions.
You'll need:
meat tray (be sure it's thoroughly clean and dry)
non-toxic white glue (tip: rub a little petroleum jelly on the opening and it won't glue itself shut)
disposable paintbrush
craft stick
bowl or cup (to hold the glue mixture)
water
gift wrap (torn into pieces like you would use for paper mache) (you can even use the leftover scraps from wrapping the gift)
glitter
embellishments you desire (I used poinsettias and faux berries and leaves)
Pour some glue into your bowl or cup, add some water. When stirred with the craft stick it should look like thick milk (tip:don't stress if you make too much you can use it over by pouring it into a small empty jar with an airtight lid).
Doing only a small section at a time, take your paintbrush and paint this mixture onto both sides (front and backside) of the edges of the meat tray, add a piece of torn gift wrap, smooth to remove all the wrinkles and air bubbles (I sometimes use my fingers, too) with the paintbrush. Paint more glue on top of the paper.
Continue on in this manner until the entire meat tray is covered (front and back).
While still wet, sprinkle glitter in the center of the tray.
Using undiluted glue, glue the embellishments where you desire.
Let dry completely.
(tip:stand them up on an empty coffee can sitting on waxed paper---be sure the embellishments are glued well enough in place before doing this--
the whole thing usually dries overnight).
There you have it. Pretty easy, huh?
I usually make sure to do the edges first but it's really an easy project.
