These are just two of a wide range of food steamers - some better than others. I have used one for years now in my tiny kitchen and I can honestly say that I have never had a second's bother with it.

Of course, after that delectable meal comes the washing up - and, what better way to tackle that than to pop everything into your dishwasher and press the 'on' button? As I have just mentioned, my kitchen is minute - but I sacrificed a base kitchen cupboard to make room for a slimline, full-size dishwasher and have never regretted it. However, if you don't have the space to do that why not choose one of the many countertop models? Comparing these table-top models with their full-size counterparts, I would say that the table-top models offer everything the full-size dishwashers offer: their design may be smaller but this makes their operation no less significant than those larger models.

Stress Free Christmas Dinner

It's the time of year many people look forward to. Visions of snowflakes, presents under the tree, mulled wine and the joyous moment of our loved ones sitting down to a festive feast. Delicious food crispy roasted potatoes, brussel sprouts, and finished off with the piece de resistance a flaming Christmas pudding. This is also usually the point where the panic starts to set in for most aspiring chefs and cooks. How to achieve the perfect dinner, without ended up a frenzied fiend over the stove!!! Having been a professional chef for many years, I have jotted down a few tips to share with you to help make this Christmas feast the best ever and also the most relaxed.

The most important trick of all, and one of the first things we are ever taught as chefs is the art of preparation. It is how the chefs on TV make it all look so simple and manage to throw together a fabulous meal in very little time without breaking into a sweat!

The first stop on the way to a stress free Christmas dinner is to make sure you have a guest list of who will be attending and to check with your guests if anybody has any specific dietary requirements. It is quite common to have guests who are gluten, dairy or wheat intolerant or who have allergies to things such as nuts. Once you know what everyone can and cannot eat you can begin with stage two.

Plan your menu well in advance and write out your shopping list. Major items can be purchased in advance and frozen down. Final fresh items such as salad ingredients, fruit and vegetables can be left for a day or two before the big event.

If you are using recipes from cookbooks, read through them well at this stage so you are familiar with exactly what you will be preparing and how long it will take - though I have to be honest I always use recipes as a guideline and add my own special touch. For my preparation list I usually have a column for the time and next to this I write down in what order I will prepare things and how long it will take, for example preparing vegetables can be made while a soup is simmering on the stove. Items such as pastry and soups and even salad dressings can be made well in advance and frozen to save you some valuable time.

Most of your food will be prepared or at least partly so, the day before, so on Christmas itself all you have to do is put together the final ingredients, and then throw on your glad rags and enjoy the party with the rest of your guests. This is also a good time to make sure your crockery, cutlery and glass wear is clean and that you have enough of it. Any final shopping should be done on the morning of Christmas eve and then the business of cooking can begin.

The main part of the meal may take longer to prepare so ensure you have it prepared in good time. Brussel sprouts can be washed and have the crosses cut into the ends. I adore root vegetables so at this stage I peel them and cut into batons, and place in a foil covered tray with some salt, pepper, fresh thyme, olive oil and brown sugar, so that they just need to be popped into the oven to finish them off. Potatoes can be peeled and part cooked, so they are ready for roasting the following day.

For the gravy I would advise purchasing a fresh stock or gravy from the supermarket, because most of us really don't have the time to make a proper stock - which can take days. Reduce some port or red wine in a pan with some chopped onion and some fresh herbs such as thyme or sage, add your gravy to this and bring to the boil, strain and serve. For a really professional finish, whisk in a little ice -cold butter at the last minute, which will really make the sauce shine.

In my family we prepare our Christmas pudding, cake and mincemeat in early September and let it rest in a cool dark place, feeding it once a week with a little brandy. However, supermarkets have now taken all the hard work out of this for you, and made their puddings up to six months in advance, and they are really delicious, and taste just like they are home made. The trick to serving a flaming pudding is to gently heat a little brandy to blood temperature and pour it over your pudding just as it comes to the table and light with a match rather than a lighter just so you don't burn your fingers. Also don't forget to turn the lights off in the room before you make your triumphant entrance!

Most important of all though, is to relax and enjoy yourself while you cook. Put some festive music on and have a glass of wine and really enjoy what you are doing. I was always taught that if you put love into what you cook it makes the best flavouring of all!!

What did we ever do before the boob tube? Television has taken the "family" out of family time. Everyone's eyes are glued to the television set and no one is talking. By setting a few guidelines, you can keep your kids from becoming strangers in their own home.

Set specific times for watching television. Some kids turn the television on as soon as they get in the house in the afternoons. On Saturday, they get out of bed and plop on the couch with the remote control. If left unregulated, television will take over your child's life. During the week, television viewing should be kept to a maximum of two to two and a half hours. When kids get home, they have homework and chores that need to be done first.

Turn the television off during dinner. I have been guilty of this myself. We grab out plates and a TV (how funny!) tray and head for the living room to continue watching our favorite show. Dinner time is family time. Everyone should sit at the table without the television and discuss their day. Something exciting may have happened at school or your husband may have gotten a raise. We miss out on getting to know each other if we don't spend time talking to one another. The one truly sacred time we have for that is at the dinner table.

We are a world that is getting fatter by the day. When I was a kid, we played outside until the street lights came on. Kids stay in the house and play video games or watch television. When do people tend to overeat? They don't pay attention to how much they are putting in their mouths when they are doing something else, like watching TV. Kids are too young to be inactive. They are the largest growing segment of the population suffering from obesity. Children are becoming couch potatoes from watching too much television.

Rules need to be established for watching television in the bedroom. Most kids do have televisions in their bedrooms. Sitting up all night watching the late, late show is a no-no. If kids choose to use their television time right before bed, set the sleep timer on the set. This way, the television will automatically shut off at their bedtime hour so they can get a good night's sleep.

What a child watches on television is as important as how much. There are all sorts of reality shows and nighttime television dramas that are not appropriate for children under the age of thirteen. Some are inappropriate for children under eighteen. Cable and satellite don't make it any easier to monitor what they watch. On regular television, most programs with mature subject matter don't air until eleven o'clock or later. On cable, they can air all evening. Those stations are not regulated like the local channels; therefore as a parent, actively paying attention to what your kids are watching is important.

If you can't be home with your kids at all times, you can block certain channels on the television. Stations that air shows that you feel are inappropriate for your child's age cannot be accessed by them if you block the channel. You can call your local cable or satellite company to find out how to go about doing this with their service. If your kids complain, sit them down and explain why they can't watch the channel. Entering into a healthy discussion about TV programs is important. As your kids age, they can handle heavier subject matter, but that is the decision of the parent.

Television is meant to be entertaining, but not to take over your life. Children need to be active not sedentary. Parents need to regulate television time for their kids. Instead, go to the park or the zoo. Real life is much more interesting than anything on TV.

2. Distance the Drinks Table. Sure, occasionally a plate is dumped over during a buffet dinner, but it's drinks you really have to worry about. The best way to prevent nasty spills? Set the drinks table up across the room from the food buffet. This will keep traffic to a minimum, minimizing the chances of guest collisions and nasty drinks spills. As a bonus, it may also prevent guests from trying to juggle loaded dinner plates in one hand and drinks in the other. They'll generally visit their table to drop off a plate of food before getting drinks, minimizing the chance of spillage. Even better, provide water and wine on the tables themselves, and make getting up to get a drink completely optional.

3. Know the Seating Arrangements. Unfortunately, most of us weren't blessed with tons and tons of space in which to set up a buffet table. And when space runs short, one of the first things to go is seating. If you don't have room for designated tables for your guests, chances are they'll have to perch on chairs, sofa-arms, or whatever piece of furniture they have handy. If this is the case, think of rearranging the dining area temporarily for your guests. Add extra end tables or TV trays to the space, and move chairs and other seating closer to tables, shelves and other places for guests to rest cups, plates, elbows, whatever. There's nothing worse than being perched on the end of a chair with nowhere to place your drink so you can eat your dinner. Think of your guests. One of the most common sights in a city are trashcans sitting on the curb, waiting for the trash company to come buy, pick up the refuse and take it to the dump.

Stop throwing things away.

That's impossible I hear people screaming.

It's not impossible, but in this modern world with its "toss it out" mentality, changing from a "dump it" mindset to a "find a different solution" mindset isn't an easy, single step. There are three areas into which almost all common household trash will fit

But in the same amount of time it takes Joe to dump the tray and box in the trash, and wash his fork, he could have dropped the tray in the sink too, washed it off and stuck it in the cupboard. Is it food? Don't put it in the bin; drop it in the composter instead.

There are a few things that can't be recycled, and there are things that shouldn't be recycled, but almost 90% of the average household trash which can't be reused or composted CAN be recycled. Check with your city to find out what can't be.

3. It can be composted.

If you're throwing away paper, cardboard or food, it can almost all be composted. Invest in a paper shredder and shred you old bills, junk mail, and any other paper that'll fit through it EXCEPT for paper coated with toxic chemicals. Tear cardboard cartons into small chunks before dropping in the recycling bin. Almost all cardboard cartons can be recycled, including waxed cartons such as whipping cream containers.

If you're in an apartment, there are small kitchen composting units that are smell free, as well as under the sink worm farms that are also smell free.

If you own a home or have a larger area, invest in a larger composting area.

When the compost is finished, either use it yourself, or give it away. Local nurseries will almost always be glad to take it off your hands.

The secret to composting is a 50/50 mix - 50% wet matter (food) and 50% dry - stuff like shredded paper and cardboard, old dry leaves, dry grass clippings and so on - warmth, and oxygen. Research composter units and composting before you start.

The added advantage to shredding your mail for composting is that no one's going to be stealing your identity from the trash can!

By changing your outlook on what to do with the stuff you currently consider trash, and seeking one of the above solutions before heading to the trash can, you can reduce your own refuse footprint substantially. If your neighbors join you, the entire neighborhood can reduce it's collective footprint substantial. Imagine the amount of trash that wouldn't hit the city dump if the entire city changed it's way of looking at tossing things in the trash.

Because we live close to the Rocky Mountain foothills and the altitude is so high in Calgary, we have to adapt our gardening habits. Backyard green houses are very common or garden frames. I can get a head start on my gardening if I start my plants in the house in early spring or buy young plants at the end of May.

This last March I was very impatient. I wanted spring to come and decided to help it along by starting my plants, in the house, way too early. By the end of April the dahlias were already two feet tall and my oriental lilies were already blooming on my kitchen table. When I finally set my dahlias out they blossomed beautifully all summer and even now are displaying huge saucer size colorful blooms. But my oriental lilies died off within a week leaving the green stems to remind me of my impatience.

One spring I was fascinated by the scarlet flowered beans that grow to the top of the fence. I started some on my window sill. They sprouted so quickly and their tendrils curled all over my chairs and TV trays in the dining room window. By May the snow was gone and the sun was shining brightly. When I got up in the morning it was at least 10 degrees centigrade. The bean tendrils were already three feet long and I knew I was trying my husband's patience with my inside garden.

Then and there I decided I too had had enough of these plants invading on my dinner plate so next morning out they went. I knew better. I know you're supposed to harden your plants off before you plant them outdoors but it's such a tedious procedure. First you set the plant out on the patio in the sun for a very short time and then take it in. The next day you put it out longer and every day a little longer until it gets used to the outdoor coolness and atmosphere. Then you can finally plant it. Even then you may have to cover it on cool nights and cooler days. I had lots of writing to do and decided to just plant them against the fence. For a couple of days I had beautiful green bean plants running up my poles but slowly most of them just shriveled up and slowly died.

This hard, time consuming work of tending vegetables and flowers makes me think of the fruit of the Holy Spirit in our lives. We try different tactics to sprout and grow them ourselves our lives. We even have some success.

Just like my plants that did so well in my warm sunny kitchen we can display symptoms of the fruit of the Holy Spirit as long as we practice them in a controlled environment. It's easy to show love to others and be patient with people as long as everything is peaceful and we are in control. But then things start going wrong. We get super busy and run out of time. We get frustrated and go back to our old habits of blaming others for my problems.

Sometimes we try so hard and it seems no matter how many different tactics we try, no fruit appears. That reminds me of the Lily of the Valley roots I purchased and not one of them grew. Even my young Peony plant was stunted in its growth. This time I knew I wasn't too blame for failure. I had to look further and realized I had bought these roots on sale at a hardware store. They just weren't healthy roots. I promised my self to buy all of my roots and bulbs at the renowned garden centre next year.

At times we too forget the source of the fruit of the Holy Spirit in our lives. We even attempt to grow these fruits of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control relying on our own strength. Or just like my young tender plants that I set out too early and a touch of frost kills them; outside influences overcome our good inclinations.

Only the Holy Spirit can grow the fruits of the Holy Spirit in our lives. We need to be close to God, spending time with Him in prayer and reading His Word and obeying Him as He leads us. It's only yielding to Him that brings godly fruit into our lives.

In the Bible we read about fruits of the Holy Spirit that God wants to grow in our lives. These fruits are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Probably most kids, even you, would like to have these characteristics. We all try to live these values. But it's hard to always love, or be good or self-controlled when things aren't going our way or we are tired or some one is giving us a hard time.

Well, I have news for you. God doesn't even want you to try to be these things all by yourself in your own strength. He wants to grow these characteristics in you. He does that when you spend time with Him.

Just like you are influenced by other kids when you spend time with them and become kind of like them, you are influenced by God when you spend time with Him and become like Him.

You can spend time with God by reading the Bible and listening to what He wants to say to you. You also spend time with Him when you pray to Him or when you go to a Bible Study or Prayer time at church with your friends. The more time you spend with God the more fruit the Holy Spirit produces in your life if you let Him.

Jesus says He is like a vine to us and we are like the branches of that vine. The branches get life from the vine so we bear fruit that the vine bears. We are blessed to be chosen by the God of the universe to be in such a close relationship with Him.

Elements of 1960s Retro Decorating Style

The Sixties were a time of enormous change, both technologically and socially. The space race was on and the American culture was focused on Sputnik, the Cold War and jet airplanes that were able to transport people faster than ever before.

American culture was also focused on a younger generation that was busy rebelling against long-established traditions. This rebellion had a huge impact on fashion, music and home decor. Everything became more dynamic, graphic and colorful. London was also a major influence on design and trends, especially with their most famous export, The Beatles. In 1964 the first discotheque opened in L.A. and quickly caught on across the country. The high-tech metallic and mirrored look of the discos influenced home and office interior design. On the opposite end of the spectrum, the hippie culture with travel to India and Morocco introduced the "ethnic" look. The words "Peace" and "Love" were seen everywhere as both graphic symbols and as a mantra of a generation. Life in the 60s focused on self-expression and home decor was just the place for people to make their individual statement.

Colors
Colors were inspired by nature. Green, gold, orange and yellow were very popular and could be found on everything from clothes, home decor and even cars. But in the 60s colors were pumped up to vibrant hues. Psychedelic colors played off one another for maximum impact. Combinations such as fuchsia pink and tangerine orange were placed side-by-side. Bright and metallic vinyl wallpapers are used. Contrasts in black-and white were also popular. The desired effect was to create maximum impact for a striking, provocative look.

Fabrics
Tie-dye, psychedelic, paisley and floral fabrics were popular. The more colorful the fabrics, the better, seen with larger sized, stylized flowers and brighter colors than ever before. Neon colors created a very modern look. The hippie look consisted of ethnic prints like Indian fabrics made of cotton. Indian saris were used as bedspreads, curtains and wall hangings.

Furniture
Flat pack furniture, "S" and pod-shaped chairs made of space age shapes and materials were the look. Furniture was made of metal, glass, wood and PVC and sometimes combinations of these. New technologies allowed furniture to be made from molded plastic and formed into organic or space age shapes. A lot of furniture was designed to be disposable and temporary. Open shelving in the Danish style was often used as room separators. Styles were fun and witty overall. Homes were now being built with casual family rooms or dens in addition to having just a formal living room. The TV became the focal point of the family room. TV trays were designed so dinner could be eaten where the family gathered-in front of the television.

Flooring
A popular flooring trend of the 60s was shag rugs. Also brightly colored textured rugs and rugs made in India and Morocco. No-wax vinyl floors were coming into vogue, replacing harder to care for linoleum.

Decor Accessories
Accessories were decorated with popular design elements like Siamese cats, mushrooms, roosters, daisies and owls. Copper and other metals were very popular. Pop art inspired by comic books and popular culture (think Andy Warhol and his "Campbell's Soup" painting). Modern art with geometric shapes and vibrant colors decorated homes, as well as psychedelic prints and op art. This look was referred to as "Mod". Posters became an accepted, inexpensive way to decorate. Lighting was exciting with lava lamps and fiber optics. The hippie look created a contrast to the modern techno look, with more muted colors and ethnic patterns. Hanging beads and leather fringe added to the hippie look.

New Technologies
Satellites allowed for transatlantic television, which contributed to Europe's (esp. Great Britain's) influence on American culture. Lucite and colored plastics were used for furniture and home accessories. Tupperware, although it had been around since 1946, was in nearly every home and was available in an array of colors. There was an emphasis on entertaining, and a multitude of kitchen appliances were created to make gatherings easier and more comfortable. Some of these appliances included electric coffee pots, electric skillets, toaster ovens and fondue pots. Electric ranges had been around since 1882, but were becoming a lot more popular in kitchens in the 1960s.

Overall Look
The overall look of the 60s was clean and open. Modernism and abstract expressionism began to take hold in the 1960s. The traditional past was rejected and new trends and points of view were celebrated. Design became a means of provoking emotion and reaction. In addition, Minimalism, as a form of Modernism reduced design to only the most essential elements. In contrast, the "flower power" and Hippie movements were more decorative and ethnic in nature.
